Choosing to build your family through donor conception can bring excitement alongside uncertainty and complex emotions. Recipient donor implications counselling provides a supportive space to explore the emotional, practical and ethical considerations of using donor sperm, eggs or embryos.

Using a known donor can be a meaningful way to build your family, while also introducing unique considerations around relationships, roles, boundaries and expectations.

Counselling provides a supportive and neutral space for recipients to explore the implications of a known donation arrangement, including expectations about the donor’s role, communication and boundaries, disclosure to the child, future relationships, changing circumstances and the needs of donor-conceived people.

Known donor arrangements generally involve separate counselling for the recipient/s and donor (and partners where applicable), followed by a joint counselling session. A minimum of two counselling sessions for each party may be required before the joint session, depending on clinic requirements and the applicable regulatory framework.
